The tradeoff is you'll all spend a lot of time craning to see the screen you're running the app on for a majority of the game time, unless you can put it on a TV near the table. It's quite streamlined - you have a character card, a weapon card, maybe some other equipment, some dice, and a few tokens for strain and effects. You can have a beer and a laugh as you play. You can very much get away with a haphazard "I'll just move here and hit this thing" sort of playstyle, at least in the early game. I think so far, at least, I give the edge to LotD in terms of fun and in terms of polish.ĭescent is definitely looser. I’d give a definite edge to Gloomhaven in terms of content and the many meaningful choices you will make at every turn of every game. No idea how much more or less content there is in terms of quests so no idea about the long term value or replayability vs Gloomhaven. It is the closest thing to D&D in a box I have ever found, and I’ve tried all the contenders. I love interacting with all the different terrain pieces. There’s a lot more interactivity in the maps with terrain and non-player characters, so far there’s some interesting variety in the types of missions (I mean you’re still mostly killing everything though), the maps often grow to be huge through the course of a session and all the 3d terrain and levels in the maps, while not adding much to the gameplay from a strategic perspective, are really cool and add a lot to the immersion. But… the missions are a lot of fun and so far there’s a lot of variety. Many fewer characters and so far feels like a lot less (and less meaningful) character progression and customization. The story feels stronger and less tacked on to me than Gloomhaven, but let’s face it this is a boardgame we’re talking here. The app is very impressive and takes almost all the fiddlyness out of it.

It is easier to dive in and have fun and not feel like you are facing a mountainous learning curve. LotD, on the other hand, is a much simpler game in almost every respect. I probably wouldn’t play without it, actually. Also worth noting the sheer fiddlyness of it, though - it really is significantly enhanced using an app like Gooomhaven Helper. Add to that the many different characters and character customizations and it is just packed with value all the way around.

Any given level can be very, very hard and winning by the skin of your teeth is very satisfying. That said, for the most part the scenarios feel a little samey, like, most of them have some story pasted on but mostly you’re killing everything that moves while doing your best to manage your hand, collect loot, and open chests again and again. There’s a lot more “there” there, if you will. Its gameplay is more complex and strategic. At a fundamental level I would say Gloomhaven is the meatier of the two. Have sunk many, many hours into Gloomhaven and obviously less so in Legends of the Dark, but I’m five sessions in so I think I’ve at least got a pretty good sense of it.
